The first Wi-Fi 7 demo in the world is showing speeds up to 2.4x faster when compared to Wi-Fi 6

We are now preparing to greet Wi-Fi 7, which has speeds much higher than Wi-Fi 6. According to MediaTek, which is a semiconductor firm from Taiwan, they already tested the Wi-Fi 7 technology and they are expecting their Wi-Fi 7 products to arrive in 2023, with Wi-Fi 7 itself coming in 2024, if everything goes as scheduled.

According to a press release, their Wi-Fi 7 demo showed a very low latency level, and also very fast speeds. The tests showcased this technology to collaborators and also key customers. They stated this new technology is set to bring in 2.4x the speed of Wi-Fi 6, without even adding more antennas.

Faster than ever before.

Wi-Fi Alliance suggests that we can have up to 30 or even 40 GBPS. Wi-Fi 6 is reaching up to 9.6 GBPS, so Wi-Fi 7 is definitely a huge leap forward. What it does is it brings in multi link operation, QUAM and channel width improvements. That makes it very attractive for all kinds of consumer gadgets, as well as smartphones, computers and also vertical industries. This will also make it easier to create hotspots all over the world.

It's stated that thanks to these speeds, Wi-Fi 7 might actually be a solid Ethernet replacement. With that being said, it will offer support for things like 8K streaming, cloud gaming, but also deliver complete support for 2.4 GHZ and up to 6 GHZ. Their MLO tech is also revolutionary because it combines multiple different channels and frequencies, which will make 8k streaming possible. That means Ethernet cables won’t be fully mandatory for the first time.

True Potential

Alan Hsu from MediaTek says that this will be the first time when Wi-Fi can actually replace the Ethernet connections. Wi-Fi 7 has the potential to become the best technology for not only industrial networks, but also offices and home users. It will help deliver 4K video calls, 8k streams and many VR or AR applications.

MediaTek states that it will release their Wi-Fi 7 products in 2023, but the new Wi-Fi version needs to be certified by the IEEE, so that might take until 2024. Wi-Fi 7 or the IEEE 802.11be standard is still in the draft specification mode right now, so we still have quite a bit of time until all of this will be implemented and ready for all users!
